Step 1: Start with simple melodies

The first step to learning to write by ear is to start with simple melodies. Choose a melody that you know well and that is easy to sing or hum. Once you have a melody in mind, try to write it down on paper. Don't worry about making mistakes at this point, just focus on getting the general shape of the melody down.

Step 2: Break the melody down into smaller parts

Once you have the basic shape of the melody down, you can start to break it down into smaller parts. This will make it easier to identify the individual notes that make up the melody.

To break down the melody, listen to it carefully and try to identify the highest and lowest notes. Once you have identified the highest and lowest notes, you can start to fill in the notes in between. You can do this by singing or humming the melody and trying to identify the individual notes.

Step 3: Use a reference point

Once you have identified the individual notes that make up the melody, you can start to use a reference point to help you write it down. A reference point is a note that you know the location of on the musical staff. This could be the tonic note of the scale, or it could be a note that you have already written down.

To use a reference point, find the note that you know the location of on the musical staff and then write the other notes in relation to that note. For example, if you know that the tonic note of the scale is C, then you can write the other notes in relation to C.

Step 4: Practice, practice, practice

The key to learning to write by ear is practice. The more you practice, the better you will become at it. Try to practice for at least 30 minutes each day. As you practice, you will start to develop your ear and you will be able to identify notes more easily.

Learning to write by ear is a valuable skill that can help you improve your musicality and creativity. It can also be a lot of fun. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can learn to write by ear in no time.
