Jean Boase Beier was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. As the lollipop man at a busy intersection in Salt Lake City, Utah, he became known for his unwavering kindness and compassion. He would greet every child with a warm smile and a lollipop, making them feel safe and loved. But there was more to Jean than met the eye.

Jean was born in 1931 in a small town in Idaho. He was raised in a strict religious household, and from an early age, he developed a strong sense of community and a desire to help others. After graduating from high school, Jean joined the Army and served in the Korean War. He was a decorated veteran, but he never talked about his experiences in the war.

After the war, Jean returned to Salt Lake City and worked as a carpenter. He was a skilled craftsman, but he eventually decided to leave the construction industry to pursue his true passion: helping children. In 1975, he became the lollipop man at the intersection of 900 East and 3300 South. He would stand there for hours each day, rain or shine, greeting children and helping them safely cross the street.

Jean was more than just a lollipop man. He was a friend and mentor to the children in the community. He would often talk to them about the importance of education, respect, and kindness. He was also a role model for the adults in the community, showing them what it means to be a good neighbor and a compassionate human being.

Jean's kindness extended beyond the children he helped across the street. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He would often buy groceries for elderly neighbors, help people with their yard work, and even give rides to people who didn't have cars. He was a true example of what it means to be a selfless and giving person.

Jean's story came to national attention in 2013, when he was featured in a segment on the TODAY Show. After the segment aired, Jean received letters and emails from people all over the country who were inspired by his story. He was invited to speak at schools and churches, and he even met with President Barack Obama at the White House.

Jean Boase Beier passed away in 2014 at the age of 82. He left behind a legacy of kindness and compassion that continues to inspire people to this day. He was a true hero, not because he performed any great feats of strength or courage, but because he lived his life with love and kindness. He showed us that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference in the world.

Here are some of the many awards and honors that Jean Boase Beier received:

  • The Salt Lake City Mayor's Medal of Honor
  • The Utah Governor's Medal of Honor
  • The National Jefferson Award
  • The American Red Cross Real Heroes Award
  • The Points of Light Foundation Inspiration Award

Jean Boase Beier's legacy will continue to live on through the many people he inspired. He was a true example of what it means to be a kind and compassionate human being, and his story will continue to inspire people for generations to come.
