Noel Streatfeild was born on Christmas Day, 1895, in Sussex, England. Her parents, Mary and Colonel Richard Streatfeild, instilled in her a love of literature from a young age. She attended St. Paul's Girls' School in London, where she excelled in writing and drama.

Streatfeild began her writing career as a journalist for various magazines. In 1930, she published her first children's book, "Tennis Shoes," which introduced the Carey sisters. The success of this debut novel led to the creation of the "The Shoes Series," which became her signature work.

The "The Shoes Series" consists of six books: "Tennis Shoes" (1930),"Ballet Shoes" (1936),"Skating Shoes" (1937),"Theatre Shoes" (1945),"Dancing Shoes" (1954),and "Party Shoes" (1957). The Carey girls, Pauline, Petrova, Posy, and Pegeen, are orphans who live together in an old house called Elmwood. Each book follows a different sister as she pursues her passion in the performing arts.

The "The Shoes Series" is known for its realistic portrayal of childhood, its strong female characters, and its exploration of themes such as sibling relationships, the importance of creativity, and overcoming adversity. The series has been adapted into numerous films, television shows, and stage productions.

In addition to "The Shoes Series," Streatfeild wrote over fifty other books for children and young adults. Some of her most notable works include:

  • The Saplings (1933): A novel about a group of evacuees during World War II.
  • The House in Dormer Forest (1936): A mystery novel set in an isolated country house.
  • Amelia Jane (1962): A series of novels about a resourceful and independent young girl.
  • When the Siren Wailed (1968): A wartime novel that tells the story of a group of children who are forced to evacuate their homes.

Noel Streatfeild married Harry Bishop in 1921. The couple had two children, a son named Robert and a daughter named Anne. Streatfeild was a dedicated mother and often involved her own children in her writings. She was also an active member of the Girl Guides and was awarded the Silver Fish for her contributions to children's literature.

Noel Streatfeild passed away in 1986 at the age of 90. Her legacy lives on through her beloved children's books, which continue to inspire and entertain generations of young readers. Her stories are known for their warmth, humor, and timeless appeal.

In recognition of her significant contributions to children's literature, Streatfeild was awarded the Carnegie Medal in 1936 for "Ballet Shoes" and the Eleanor Farjeon Award in 1969 for her overall body of work.
